Marks & Spencer have made a special edition of the much loved table football game Subbuteo. This version, in retro-look packaging, contains everything you need to play the game and bring on a heavy sense of nostalgia.

The game requires players flicking, with a finger, at the base of the plastic footballers to advance the ball, pass, shoot or strategically place your players on the field (cloth) of play. All aspects of real football play a part in the game – including free kicks, penalties, corners, throw-ins and the off-side rule.
Subbuteo was first made in 1946 and, in a toy and games market that included lots of versions of Association Football, soon became the dominant table football game, with hundreds of teams and scores of accessories available to buy in its heyday.
Whilst the world’s fascination with the beautiful game has only grown, sadly Subbuteo has all but disappeared from the toy shop and is kept alive by the efforts of a loyal legion of dedicated fans.
So it gives me great pleasure to see a version widely available in a high street department store this Christmas if not, alas, in my favourite toy shops.
Whilst Marks & Spencer are not selling extra teams or other familiar Subbuteo accessories, they have re-printed the 2004 book by Daniel Tatarsky: “Flick to Kick An Illustrated History of Subbuteo”, which is an excellent gift book to bring back some fond memories.
The Subbuteo brand name has also been used on a beautiful football rattle, a vintage leather ball, playing cards, a porcelain mug, a vacuum flask (handy for half-time servings of Bovril) and even a wash bag. Yes a wash bag, Marks & Spencer has even thought of the modern day table-top footballer that has become affected with overbearing vanity.
