In a year that celebrates 50 years of Barbie, we also see the world’s most famous fashion doll attend the Kentucky Derby for the first time; in the guise of a collectible doll from the Pink Label Collection designed by Linda Kyaw.
Barbie is dressed in summery white with floral print dress, she also wears a faux pearl necklace and two tickets to the grandstand are clutched in a manner that makes me wonder how the doll has managed with such a distinct lack of handbags or purses over the past fifty years.
Of course, no lady’s race-going attire would be complete without a resplendent hat and Barbie wears a beautiful oversized white hat, accented with flowers on one side.
Barbie’s hat has also been produced in an adult sized version, which has been limited to 135 replicas. The first of these hats will be auction for charity, while the remaining 134 are available to buy from the Kentucky Derby Store.
The Kentucky Derby itself, also known as the Run for the Roses, will have its 135th running on May 2nd 2009; taking place at Churchill Downs, Lousiville, Kentucky, USA.

A new take on the bathing suit doll has been released to coincide with Barbie’s 50th anniverary, in which Mattel tries to recapture an essence of the original, while setting it firmly in 2009.
The 1959 -2009 Bathing Suit Doll keeps the stripes but the swim-wear is a bikini. It’s cut into a rather retro shape and the trademark pink makes an appearance in form of adorning ribbons, tied into bows. Her hair is tied into a lavish ponytail as a further reminder of the 1959 original.
The accessories with this new doll are also pink with sunglasses, hooped earrings, a hairbrush and a mobile phone, how very 2009.
