Electronic games are often looked upon as a quite sedentary form of entertainment but acceptable for passing the time when confined to an aeroplane seat or on a long car journey. However, Catcha’ Beast is an electronic game that will get children moving; in fact, in a spin.

Catcha Beast in its packaging

Once the batteries are installed there is some further set-up to do. The date and time needs to be entered, which is important as some beasts can only be caught at certain times. Then the device needs to be calibrated so that it recognises the direction it is being pointed in. This vital stage is the first but by no means the last time the player will need to spin 360 degrees.

Catcha' Beast closed

When ready to catch a monster: the player slides up the screen and unfolds the reel handle, with the screen held out in front of the player, they start rotating. An on-screen indicator tells when a beast is close and when to throw out some line to try and hook the beast. When hooked the player gets an opportunity to use a weapon but when first played there are no weapons available, so it will escape. The prey needs to be chased, gradually wearing it down until it is caught earning treasure points and gold. Naturally even a tired beast will resist the threat of its liberty being taken away, so the player must be ready to dodge by spinning, if it fires. Beasts can also be lured by using meat, fish, bones or even jewellery.

Once the first beast is caught, stronger beasts can be hunted by using a weapon or teaming-up with a caught beast as a partner. Captured beasts can be fed to improve them. They can also be exchanged for gold or weapons. The performance of the rod can be customised with earned treasure points. For example, the power of the reel can be improved.

A great part of Catcha’ Beast’s appeal is the ability to connect 2 devices together and battle or trade with friends. The battling game involves trying to capture one of your opponents beasts to add it to the collection and if successful, as well as a gain for the winner, the loser still keeps their beast, keeping play fair and friendly. When it comes to trading, players will be able to swap versions of the various things used to lure beasts; the are red and blue versions of each lure.

Catcha' Beast open

There’s so much more to this game that I will be playing it for some time to come. I have to admit that catching beasts is going to one of the many things I’m rather poor at; I’ve been getting dizzy all to easily. Those determined to make a beast catching name for themselves will find using the 2 player mode essential as well as mastering the various methods of capture, trading and other intricacies of the game.
