Two players take control of Lightning McQueen and the King in a head-to-head race for the Piston Cup.

As with tradition, race on the sight of the green light. The cars are simply controlled by pressing one of the steering wheels to advance the car along the track.

However, in this race you have to obey the red light as well; make sure you stop, otherwise you’ll be back at the starting line.

Sensors at the finishing line mean that even a the end of the closest race, the champion will be announced immediately.

Push Lightning Storm McQueen along the ground and you’ll hear the roar of a racing car engine.

Pull up the rear spoiler and McQueen transforms in to a jet fighter aeroplane. The wings pop out and the 2 missiles and 2 sets of bombs are revealed – read to be fired. Make it fly through the air and you’ll hear the jet engine sounds.

Lightning Storm McQueen is an exciting toy, especially with its sounds activated by movement. The ability the transform it into a jet plane makes it great fun to run around with.

The Doctor Who Micro Universe Spaceship sets include a display stand and a figure that can’t be found in the regular packs but which can still be used in the battle game.

The Game

Doctor Who Micro Universe - Playing the Game

2 players play against each other. Each player lines up their figures in front of them and the bases of the figures must remain facing down until they are used in the game.

The player that goes first may then pick up a figure and choose one of the values marked under the base. The values are marked against 4 abilities, which are: Logic Rating; Temporal; Fear Factor and Physical Ability.

The player then declares which character they are using, which ability is going to be used and which character on the opposite team is being challenged. Both players declare the chosen figures’ score for the chosen ability and then the spinners are spun. The scores from the spinners are added to the scores from the figures and the one with the highest total wins the round.

The losing figure is then set-aside and remains out the game. The winning figure misses a turn but then can be used again in the game. Play continues until either the winner puts all of their opponents figures out of the game, has won the most rounds during a certain amount of time or wins a set number of rounds.

The instruction leaflet suggests “…playing for keeps…or for fun.” I think this will lead to a lot of upset younger children in school playgrounds causing the game to be banned from schools, especially as each figure could be considered to be worth £1.66. Many children would include a for keeps rule in their game anyway, such as they do with trading card games, so stating it in the printed rules was wholly unnecessary.
