LEGO The Avengers [Assemble] 2012 movie poster (300x225)For some months now, there has been talk of a forthcoming film and every time I hear it’s name mentioned with reference to new ranges of  action figures or LEGO, I raise an eyebrow in anticipation of what (to me at least) would be the most exciting toy range so far this century.

Alas, I find my self disappointed to find that bowler hats, umbrellas and alluring side-kicks have little to do with Marvel’s version of the “The Avengers”. So, it is with some relief that (in the UK at least) the film will be called Avenger Assemble. I’m almost certain this is to avoid the kind of confusion that yours truly suffered across nation which was  once charmingly, wittily and above all fictionally defended by John Steed and his companions.Continue Reading

Mega Bloks pink tub of plastic building blocks.MEGA Brands has signed a deal with Mattel that will allow the company to make Mega Bloks construction kits based upon the popular Hot Wheels and Barbie toy brands.

There have all ready been many Mega Bloks sets based upon characters, films and even video games tie-ins. Examples include: Halo, Iron Man, Hello Kitty, Smurfs and Thomas the Tank Engine.

The signing of these two licenses differs from almost all of MEGA Brand’s previous offerings, in that Hot Wheels and Barbie have been famous for decades as being toys first and foremost.Continue Reading

Mothercare Hires for Online Expansion as Head Office Jobs are Under Threat

Staff at Mothercare’s Watford-based head office are at risk of possible redundancy, reports the Watford Observer, the company informed personnel on Monday that it was starting a 30-day consultation over plans to reduce costs at its head-quarters.

158 jobs are at risk, ninety-eight of which are based in the UK office; a further sixty positions in consultation are overseas.

On the Wednesday (14th March 2012) of the same week, a number of new E-commerce related positions were advertised on a Mothercare website, providing further evidence that the 50 year-old nursery and clothing firm sees its future as an online retailer rather than a high street chain.Continue Reading

Meanwhile, Mothercare plc have closed down numerous Early Learning Centre toy shops since it bought Chelsea Stores Holding Limited in 2007.Many have enquired within The Toy Detective Agency about how many Early Learning Centre (ELC) shops have or will be closed-down since it was bought-out by Mothercare in 2007. Almost five years on, we’ve assigned a detective to compare ELC stores listed at the back of its 2007 Christmas catalogue with what remains on the high street.

Mothercare Expected to Announce Further Store Closures in May

Mothercare (MTC.L), according to a report in the Financial Times, is expected to announce further store closures when it reports its full-year earning in May. An even leaner version the of baby equipment, clothing and toy retailer could have no more than 200 stores.

The company had all ready stated, in May 2011, that it intended to close 110 stores (including around 80 branches of its Early Learning Centre chain of toy shops), leaving 266 high street and out-of-town locations.Continue Reading

USA: Dorel Recalls 900,000 Safety 1st Push ‘N Snap Cabinet Locks

Recalled Safety 1st Push 'N Snap Cabinet Lock (1) Safety 1st have recalled 900,000 Push ‘N’ Snap Cabinet Locks because the locks can fail, allowing children gain access to potentially dangerous items that parents thought were safely beyond reach.

Dorel, the products importers, has received 200 reports of locks that did not adequately secure the cabinet, including reports of damaged locks. From the reported incidents there were 140 children between the ages of 9 months and 5 years who were able to disengage the locks and gain access to the cabinet’s contents.

In three of the reported incidents, the children who gained access swallowed or handled dishwashing detergent, window cleaner or oven cleaner, and were treated, observed and released from emergency treatment centres.Continue Reading

USA & Canada Toy Recall: 4-in-1 Dramatic Play Theater by Guidecraft due to Tip-Over Hazard

Recalled Guidecraft  4-in1 Play TheaterGuidecraft together with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada have recalled its “4-in-1 Dramatic Play Theater” due to its potentential to unexpectedly tip-over, posing an entrapment hazard to young children.

The product was made in China. Around 1,800 units in the United States and 350 in Canada are affected.

So far, its distributor Guidecraft has received two reports of tip-over incidents, including one report of a child who suffered minor contusions and abrasions.Continue Reading
