Four of the characters from popular TV show Mad Men are to feature as dolls in Mattel’s Barbie Fashion Model collection. They will go on sale in July to coincide with the launch of the forth series on U.S. television. The U.S. price for these dolls is expected to be $74.95 each.
The characters in the range are Don Draper, Betty, John Sterling and secretary Joan Holloway. Those that buy the DVD of the third series of Mad Men (due for release 23rd March in the U.S. and 26th April in the U.K.) will get an early glimpse of the dolls in the form of sketch drawings placed in the box.
Mattel described the dolls as being “…stylized in iconic costumes from the series, and [each] comes with accessories true to their show counterparts. Don Draper wears his classic, polished red-lined suit and comes accessorized with a hat, overcoat and brief case; Betty Draper’s classic look is captured with unparalleled detail, from her faux pearl necklace to her pumps; Joan Holloway looks chic in a purple skirt suit and perfectly styled coif with her staple accessory – a pen necklace; and Roger Sterling is looking dapper in his monogrammed shirt.”
With all that attention to detail, I conjecture that the omission of cigarettes and Martini glasses must be quite, quite deliberate.

Lego’s latest results show double digit sales growth in the UK for the fifth year running. Net profit for 2009 was £264 million, a 45.4 per cent increase on the £144 million of 2008. Turnover for 2009 was £1.3 billion verus £1.01 billion in 2008.
These results see Lego’s global market share increase to 4.8 per cent.
Marko Ilincic, Managing Director of Lego UK & Ireland, said: “We are extremely pleased with our results for 2009. It’s still a tough time for the market but the current trend for nostalgic toys and public demand for brands they know and trust has meant that we’ve fared well. Our classic product lines continue to drive sales whilst the introduction of LEGO board games has helped fuel growth further. We’ve already had a good start to 2010 and based on the positive sales figures in 2009 we predict continued double digit growth for LEGO UK and Ireland throughout the balance of this year.”
Chuggington looks set to be the next big thing in the toy shop. At least that’s the opinion of young railway engineers. Toys R Us will be one of the first retailers to make Chugginton toys arrive at destination toy box, by taking pre-orders in time for its 12th March 2010 launch at the retailer.
Amazon.co.uk are also taking pre-orders and will have Chuggington toys available from 22nd March 2010. The Entertainer chain of toy shops simply won’t miss this departure and will stock the range of die-cast trains and other toys based upon the hit animated TV series.

Argos have employed Rocket Creative to re-design the well known Chad Valley toy range. Research was carried-out to identify where the brand should sit within the toy market before working on the new range, which is expected to launch in the 2010 Autumn Winter Argos catalogue.
Andrew Turner, Argos marketing manager commented: “The Rocketeers have worked wonders so far developing some amazing concepts and successfully meeting strict deadlines with ease. I think it’s safe to say we are all getting very excited about unveiling the final designs.”
Chad Valley was established in 1860. Argos bought brand last year as part of the selling-off of Woolworths assets.
