The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Reiss Innovations have recalled sets of DynoCube, a “HighPowered desk toy”. Each set contains 216 small, silver-coloured, spherical magnets that are approximately 5 millimetres in diameter.
Around 500 units are affected, the product was made in China. So far, there have been no reported incidents or injuries due to this particular toy. However, the CPSC has received 79 reports involving the ingestion of similar powerful magnets that resulted in medical intervention.
CPSC describe the risk: “When two or more magnets are swallowed, they can link together inside a child’s intestines and clamp onto body tissues, causing intestinal obstructions, perforations, sepsis and death. Internal injury from magnets can pose serious lifelong health effects.”
The toys were sold on Amazon.com and Dynocube.com from July 2011 until April 2012 for about $20.
These toys should stop being used immediately. Reiss Innovations can be contacted for instructions on returning the magnet sets for a full refund.
