The unfortunate fate of the world’s largest toy store has been sealed by news that clothing
retailer Gap will move into the current Times Square location of Toys “R” Us.
According to a report by CNBC, Gap will occupy 31,000 square foot of 1514 Broadway, sister
company Old Navy will also take a similar sized unit. Both stores due to open in early 2017.
Gap stated : “We’re pleased to confirm our plans to construct our newest Gap and Old Navy
flagship stores in one of one of the world’s most well-known locations – Times Square. This
signature spot builds on Gap’s continued commitment to showcase its brands in ideal locations
that best serve customers. Once complete in 2017, we’re excited to see two of our iconic
American brands welcome customers in the heart of New York City.”
Toys “R” Us currently occupies 110,000 square foot of the building, making it the largest toy
store in the world. When the Times Square store closes-down in 2016, Hamleys in Moscow,
Russia will be the largest toy store.
