Toys R Us plans to close 182 stores in the USA in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy. Around 4,500 workers could be made redundant as a result of this.
More than half of the affected branches are Babies R Us stores, a chain that was established in 1996 and whose expansion was accelerated by the acquisition of The Baby Superstore chain.
The owners of the retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the USA during September 2017.
It also filed for protection in Canada at the same time, however, for the time being, there are no planned closures of the 83 stores in Canada.
In the UK, 25 stores began up to 30% off closing down sales in the last week.
In the court filing regarding the 182 store closures, the company seeks the judge’s permission the hire a new group of consultants to oversee the liquidation of the stores.
It also seeks to make an allowance of $3.6 million to use as an incentive bonus, in order to keep employees working in affected stores until the last day. The filing warns, however, that due to large number of layoffs, the firm’s payroll department may struggle to pay all employees on exactly the day after their last day of employment, a legal requirement in some states.
Some stores are already in the process of closing down, this includes Naperville Babies R Us, 1955 Glacier Park Ave, Naperville, IL (9238).
There are four Toys R Us Express stores closing, these are Midtown Miami (5571), Kahului (5544), Michigan City (6855), Robstown (7073).
Two stores in Puerto Rico were closed due to the hurricanes and these stores will remain closed permanently: Carolina (8723) and Hatillo (8720).
The 175 stores that are expected to start a closing down sale mid-February are listed below. SBS stands for Side By Side, these are locations that have both a Toys R Us and Babies R Us store in adjacent retail units. TRU and BRU stand for Toys R Us and Babies R Us respectively.
