Lego has started production of a new sustainable range of pieces that will join the popular plastic brick.
The new elements are made from plant-based plastics that are sourced from sugarcane. The new material will be used for leaves, bushes, and tree-shaped pieces – the botanical elements of the Lego world.
The introduction of plant-based plastic is part of Lego Group’s commitment to use sustainable materials in its core products and packaging by 2030.
The new elements are fully compatible with Lego’s existing range of bricks and will even fit together with components made decades ago. The company promises that the new sustainable pieces meet the high standards for quality and safety that customers have come to expect from Lego.
Technically identical to elements produced using conventional plastic, the new elements are made from polyethylene, which is a soft, durable and flexible plastic.

We are proud that the first LEGO elements made from sustainably sourced plastic are in production and will be in LEGO boxes this year.
